FRANCE -  Around Paris

Versailles

Versailles (30 kms of Paris) maintains an aura of monarchic opulence with its imposing palace and magnificent gardens. King Louis XIV, in the 17th century, commissioned the best architect (le Vau) and the best gardener (le Nôtre) of the time and, inspired by the god Apollo, he had build an enormous palace and matching gardens - archetypes of the french style, copied worldwide. He moved the court there and everything was revolving around the sun king : noblemen, clergy, artists, ambassadors, entertained by the palace intrigues and extravagant parties. The most emblematic place in Versailles is the glittering Gallerie des Glaces, where balls, banquets and royal receptions were held. The gardens of Versailles, around the fountains and mythological statues, have defined the french style which would be copied all over the world. Versailles castle is an UNESCO’s World Heritage.
