The Federated States of Micronesia - FSM - Yap
Yap is one of the four states in the Federated States of Micronesia (FSM) and is situated in the Western Caroline Islands between Guam and Palau. Yap is one of the most intriguing and traditional islands in Micronesia.
The lush tropical island of Yap is known as the “Land of Stone Money”, due to the ancient currency of huge disks of stone. The large coins, some over 12 feet (3.5 meters) in diameter, are still used today in local and traditional customs. The town of Colonia is the capital and is more urbanised than the village areas. The island was opened for tourism in 1989, tourists are coming for diving and to catch a glimpse of the traditional Micronesian island culture..
