Basque Country

The Basque country in the south-west of France, split between France and Spain, is renowned for its culture and language. Its people continue in their strong customs and traditions, and the food is sure to satisfy even the boldest of palettes with its intricate and earthy cuisine mixing a variety of vegetables with seafood delights. Typical dishes on offer include bayonne ham, foie gras, and gateau basque. Top of any visitors list of things to do are surely a visit to Biarritz or Saint Jean de Luz (gigantic waves for surfing), on the Atlantic coast, but do not forget the cities of Bayonne (timbered buildings hugging the shores of the rivers Adour and Nive) and Saint Jean Pied de Port which was a famous step on the pilgrim route of Saint Compostela.
