FRENCH POLYNESIA -

Austral Archipelago - Raivavae

Located 630 km southeast of Tahiti, Raivavae is a volcanic island that culminates with Mount Hiro at 437 meters above sea level. It has a surface area of 16 km2, surrounded by a fairly large lagoon but smaller than that of Tubuai, surrounded by a coral reef comprising twenty-eight motu (islets). The main island hosts four villages: Anatonu on the north coast, Rairua and Mahanatoa located on the west coast, and Vaiuru located on the east coast. Following the conversion to Christianity of the inhabitants of the island at the end of the 19th century, many sacred sites, marae and statues, were destroyed. However, there remains in Raivavae a tiki (woman) with a laughing face.
