FRENCH POLYNESIA

Austral Archipelago - Tubuai island

Tubuai is a volcanic island is located 195 km from Raivavae, 210 km from Rurutu, 700 km from Rapa and 640 km south of Tahiti. The island is made up of two ancient volcanic units culminating at Mount Taita'a at 422 m and separated by the Huahine pass (35 meters). The island is surrounded by a large lagoon which is the largest in the Australs. The mutineers of the Bounty took refuge there, then they wanted to reach the coast with boats but they received stone throwing. They then retaliated with their muskets and 12 Tahitians were killed. It is since this massacre that the bay has been nicknamed Bloody Bay.
