Republic of SAN MARINO
San Marino is a mountainous microstate surrounded by Italy and was founded as a city-state in the 13th century. On the slopes of Monte Titano sits its capital, also named San Marino, known for its medieval walled old town and narrow cobblestone streets. The famous three fortification towers, castlelike citadels dating to the 11th century, sit atop 3 of Titano’s neighboring peaks. The old towns of San Marino and Borgo Maggiore, as well as Mount Titano with its natural environment have been listed as UNESCO World Heritage sites since 2008.
